Official directories are the most reliable way to verify a certified translator in Canada

Step-by-step demonstration of how to verify a certified translator in Canada using the official ATIO directory.

In Canada, certified translators are members of recognized professional associations. To ensure authenticity, you may verify a translator’s credentials directly through official directories such as the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario (ATIO).

Step 1: Access the ATIO Directory

Go to the official ATIO website - https://atio.on.ca. At the top navigation bar, click “Directory”. This will take you to the main directory page.

Step 2: Enter the Translator Directory

On the Directory page, locate the section labeled “Translator”, then click the “Go To Directory” button. This will open the Certified Translator Directory.

Step 3: Select Languages

You will now see search filters.

For “Source Language (from)”, click “Select Some Options”. A list of languages will appear. Scroll toward the bottom of the list and select “Chinese (ZH)”. Languages are sorted by code, and “ZH” appears near the end (second to the last).

For “Target Language (to)”, click “Select Some Options”. From the list, select “English (EN)”, which is typically located near the upper portion of the list.

Step 4: Run the Search

Click the “Search” button. The system will display the first page of results. As of today (16-April-2026), there are 39 certified translators in this language combination at ATIO, and the first page shows only 25 entries.

Step 5: Navigate to Additional Pages

To view the remaining entries, locate the text “Page 1 of 2” and click the small “>” arrow to the right. This will take you to the second page of results.

Step 6: Locate the Translator

On Page 2, scroll to the bottom of the list. You may see: Gao Shan Wu CERTIFIED / AGRÉÉ(E).

Alternative Method (Recommended for Faster Results)

To locate a translator more efficiently, you may narrow down the results by selecting an area of expertise.

Under “Areas of Expertise / Domaines d’expertise”, choose one of the following categories:

  • Education / Éducation

  • Medical / Médicale

  • Law / Droit

These categories reflect common document types handled by certified translators. By applying one of these filters, the number of results will be reduced, and the translator’s name may appear more easily, often without needing to navigate to the second page.

Important Note

Certified translators do not always appear on the first page of results. Depending on the search criteria, you may need to navigate through multiple pages or refine your filters to locate a specific name.

Why This Matters

This process allows you to verify that a translator is officially certified, confirm their presence in a recognized professional directory, and ensure your documents are handled by a qualified professional.
